Amputation & Limb Differences
Limb Loss and Limb DifferencesThere are approximately 1.7 million people with limb loss in the United States (excluding fingers and toes). More than 185,000 new amputations are performed each year in this country. Men are much more likely to suffer amputation or limb difference than are females. Many lose a limb due to a trauma. Some suffer traumatic amputation. Others must have a limb removed as part of a surgery needed to treat injuries suffered in an accident. Still others suffer life threatening infections along with their injuries which ultimately lead to amputation. Work related injuries are a significant cause of trauma related amputations. Most occur when workers get caught in machinery, equipment or power tools. These injuries are often caused by inadequate warnings, inadequate guarding of moving parts, improper repair and maintenance, improper training on the use of the machine, equipment or tools, or poor instruction regarding safe procedures. All of these types of injuries are foreseeable and can be prevented by appropriate action on the part of manufacturers and others. Other causes of trauma related amputations are motor vehicle crashes. Some result from medical negligence in the diagnosis and treatment of hospital or other acquired bacterial infections. The loss of a limb often results in a difficult transition back into the work place and into daily activities of life. While there are many resources such as the National Limb Loss Information Center to help patients and families return from devastation of these injuries, often monetary resources are needed to assist with loss of income, health bills, rehabilitation and life care needs.
